Many people yearn to be more self-confident. Yet they have no idea how to achieve that objective. They look at others who have the gift and say, “Hey that?s what I want. I hate feeling unsure of myself. I wish I could stop obsessing about what others think of me and quit worrying about disappointing other people. I want to stop anguishing over my decisions and torturing myself about my mistakes. I think it would be so great to feel self-assured, hold my head up high and stand tall. I?ve never been self-confident. I wish there were a way I could be.”
There is a way. You don?t have to be born with self-confidence. Self-confidence can grow and flourish and ripen and blossom until you actually come to feel as though there is a different person inside of you. Here are some insights that might facilitate the quest.
Learn what a self-confident person is really like. They are not cocky, know-it-all people who don?t care what anybody else thinks. They have their doubts. And make mistakes. And are far from perfect. However, they are willing to acknowledge their inadequacies without dwelling on them. They do this by maintaining a sense of humor, putting problems in perspective, and focusing mainly on what they?ve done right, not wrong.
Though self-confident people do believe in themselves, they don?t try to suffocate others with their ideas or beliefs. They are confident in what they know not only because they read, learn and think but also because they respect their instinct, intuition and the unique body of knowledge that they?ve developed by living life. They realize that one doesnt have to be labeled an “expert” to believe in ones own truths.
Self-confident people don?t undermine their own worth by comparing themselves with others, only to conclude that they aren?t “good enough”. They appreciate their strengths and accomplishments and can acknowledge, without embarrassment, their weaknesses. They don?t live in the “victim” position. Even if something really bad has occurred, they turn it into a challenge, remembering to be grateful for the little things in life.
Self-confident people let the world know who they are. If they want something badly enough, they know they have every right to “go for it.” Yet, they also know that the path will rarely be easy. Mistakes, blunders and failures are part of the learning process. They seek to learn from their mistakes and do not waste time torturing themselves over what “could have been”.
Self-confident people are not obstinate people. If they have an idea about something and it differs from the way another person is thinking about it, they will usually try to look at it from that person?s point of view, see why it makes sense to them. Yet, a confident person?s sense of self is grounded. It does not blow in the wind. Their ideas do not fluctuate based on what others deem are important.
I hope these insights are helpful to you. If so, perhaps one day you will be able to say what the actress Phyllis Rashid once said, simply but eloquently, ” I am just myself and who I am is a lot.”

His mother would massage his little legs, but there was no feeling, no control, nothing. Yet his self-confidence was as strong as ever. One sunny day his mother wheeled him out into the yard to get some fresh air. This day instead of sitting there, he threw himself from the chair. He pulled himself across the grass. He worked his way to the white picket. With great confidence, he raised himself on the fence. Then, stake by stake, he began to dragging himself along the fence! Since that, he started to do this every day until he wore a smooth path all around the yard beside the fence. When he did that, he always said to himself :"I believe myself, I can walk!"Finally through his daily exercise and strong self-confidence, he was able to stand up! Then to walk haltingly, then to walk by himselfand thento run! He began to run to school. Later in college he made the track team. Still later, in Berlin 1936 Olympic Games, this young man got a silver medal of the running race! Now, you know, everyone needs self-confidence which can help them overcome the difficulty. So we can say self-confidence is the key of success. Come on, let’s be self-confident! That’s all, thank you!
We Are the World, We Are the Future
someone said “we are reading the first verse of the first chapter of a book, whose pages are infinite”. I don?t know who wrote these words, but I?ve always liked them as a reminder that the future can be anything we want it to be. We are all in the position of the farmers. If we plant a good seed, we reap a good harvest. If we plant nothing at all, we harvest nothing at all.
We are young. “How to spend the youth?” It is a meaningful question. To answer it, first I have to ask “what do you understand by the word youth?” Youth is not a time of life; it?s a state of mind. It?s not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips or supple knees. It?s the matter of the will. It?s the freshen Of the deep spring of life.
A poet said “To see a world in a grain of sand, and a heaven in a wild flower, hold infinity in the palm of your hand, and eternity in an hour. Several days ago, I had a chance to listen to a lecture. I learnt a lot there. I?d like to share it with all of you. Let?s show our right palms. We can see three lines that show how our love. Career and life is. I have a short line of life.

Youth is not a time of life, it is a state of mind; it is not rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees, it is a matter of the emotions: it is the freshness; it is the freshness of the deep springs of life.
Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity of the appetite, for adventure over the love of ease. This often exists in a man of 60 more than a boy of 20. Nobody grows old merely by a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals.
Years wrinkle the skin, but to give upenthusiasm wrinkles the soul. Worry, fear, self distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit back to dust.
Whether 60 of 16, there is in every human being?s heart the lure of wonders, the unfailing childlike appetite of what?s next and the joy of the game of living. In the center of your heart and my heart there?s a wireless station: so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, cheer, courage and power from men and from the infinite, so long as you are young.
When the aerials are down, and your spirit is covered with snows of cynicism and the ice of pessimism, then you are grown old, even at 20, but as long as your aerials are up, to catch waves of optimism, there is hope you may die youngat 80.

一旦青春的天线倒下，你的灵魂即为玩世不恭之雪、悲观厌世之冰覆盖;即使你年方20.其实你已垂垂老也。而只要你青春的天线高高耸起，就可以随时接收到乐观的电波-----即使你年过八旬，行将就木，而你却仍然拥有青春，你仍然年轻。
The tempo of modern civilization has been much quickened in the last twenty years. While witnessing the dramatic changes in the better-off society, people begin to reconsider the question of "survival". "Survival" in the old sense does not bother us anymore. Instead, we are more concerned about how to "survive" in the human world full of competition.
Competition always carries abreast challenges and opportunities to everyone involved. It might appear in an entrance exam, in a regular class, or in a small public speech. Those who fail to detect its real nature-whether an opportunity or a challenge a competition really is- will lose something more or less conducive to our growth. Of course, if we take the competition as an opportunity, we will favor it intentionally because they can help us outstand from the average; they will make us become the focus of public attention; they will grant us more chances and rights to succeed. As a matter of fact, opportunities are supposed to be more perceptible and welcoming than challenges. The truth is, however, we will lose more opportunities when we choose to take the "opportunity" fork at the crossroads. The other fork, ignored by us and defined as "fearful challenges", offers much more chances for the walker in competition.
We have such an inclination in life to overestimate ourselves and hold a thoughtless attitude towards the negative outlook of things.
We believe in the old saying, "Opportunity knocks but just once," so we always welcome it and devote all our spirit and efforts to it. The most devout believer of this saying are the graduates. Why? There are quite a number of them who pay full attention to positions in big cities and are willing to flood into developed areas under any circumstances, even though there will be too much uncertainty for their choices. Innumerable cases go straight to the same miserable end: God seems to refuse to help too many of His worshipers.
In conclusion, to define the quality of competition seems to be far from valuable sense, for no matter whata competition is, an opportunity or a challenge, it will create nutritious elements for our growth.
So take a positive look at everything around. Keep our face to the sunshine, and we will not see the shadows.

Winning a game is success; getting a high grade in the exam is success; making a new friend is success; even now I am
standing here giving my speech is somehow also success.
However, as a person?s whole life is concerned, success becomes very
complicated. Is fortune success? Is fame success? Is high social status success? No, I don?t think so. I believe success is the realization of people?
s hopes and ideals. Nowadays, in the modern society there are many people
who are regarded as the successful. And the most obvious characteristics of hem are money, high position and luxurious life. So most people believe that s success and all that they do is for this purpose. But the problem is whether it is real success. We all know there are always more money, higher position and better condition in front of us. If we keep chasing them, where is the end? What will satisfy us at last? Therefore, we can see, to get the real Success we must need something inside, which is the realization of
people? hopes and ideals.
Different people have different ideas about success; cause people?s hopes and ideas vary from one another. But I am sure every success is dear to everybody, because it is not easy to come by, cause in the process of our striving for success, we got both our body and soul tempted, meanwhile we are enlightened by the most valuable qualities of human beings: love, patient, courage and sense of responsibility. These are the best treasures. So now I am very proud that I have this opportunity to stand here speaking to all of you. It is my success, because I raise up to challenge my hope.
